Chaterine Bastian from Salpeli village sifts through almost a million dollars worth of pearls on Thursday morning in Raja Ampat. Pearl farming is a financially and environmentally sustainable industry – a much better option than mining. However local government figures are trying to shut down the Australian-run operation as they are refusing to pay bribes in order to continue operating.
