The distinctive Chipaya costume – poncho and wide brimmed hat for the men, hooded poncho for the women – is thought to have survived for thousands of years. The hairstyle of the women – consisting of 62 braids – has been in found in centuries old chullpas (burial mounds) further suggesting ancient origins.
